Our Home
In the midst of a global pandemic in 2020, 50 women, non-binary, and gender-expansive leaders (many of whom were directly impacted by incarceration) came together to bring their vision to a new site: 401 State Street. The former headquarters of a global foundation in Downtown Brooklyn.
Located in Boerum Hill, Brooklyn, this four-story, 19,000 sq. ft. building is the heartbeat of our work. Our home was designed to be a safe and vibrant gathering space where grassroots efforts are resourced, relationships are built, and collective power grows.
About 401 State Street
Our Mural
Adorning the exterior of 401 State Street is a powerful mural titled “We are the ones we have been waiting for,” drawn from June Jordan’s Poem for South African Women.
The mural spans generations, identities, and movements. Its imagery reflects the collective journey of women, girls, and gender-expansive folks, and the communities that we are rooted within.
The mural was brought to life by lead artist Katie Yamasaki. Woven into its imagery are quotes from visionary leaders such as Audre Lorde, Grace Lee Boggs, and Dolores Huerta: reminders of radical hope, connection, and power.
Our Art Collection
Throughout Our Home, we’re proud to display a curated selection of art and photography. Each piece honors lived experience, celebrates grassroots leadership, and amplifies the brilliance and creativity of women, girls, and gender-expansive people.
Together, this collection is a declaration of our vision: a world where power and opportunity are equitably distributed and marginalized communities are in a place of stability, sustainability, and personal and professional advancement.
Our current collection was curated by Shantrelle Lewis with the guidance of values-aligned advisors from organizations like Alternate ROOTS, NALAC, First People’s Fund, and the Kentucky Foundation for Women. Featured artists include Swoon (Edline), Faviana Rodriguez (Freedom Justice Voice Power), Jaymes Jorsling (Seychelles), Russell Frederick (Church Ladies), Sara Shamasvari (Imeni, Paris Veil; Asha, NYC Veil; Blue, London Veil), and Nadia Taquary (Irun Eja).
