Women Building Up (WBU) is a movement-accountable philanthropic organization built by and for women, girls, and gender-expansive people directly impacted by carceral systems.

What We Do •

What We Do •

Convene

We invest in the people doing the work, creating space for leaders to connect, rest, learn from each other, and build the organizational strength to sustain their movements over time.

Fund

We fund grassroots efforts organized by and for directly impacted women, girls, and gender-expansive people — locally, nationally, and internationally — and work to grow the total resources flowing to those closest to the work.

Connect

We offer our community a coworking space at 401 State Street, our 19,000-square-foot home in Brooklyn. Community members host events, collaborate, and build relationships across shared space.

Our Early Impact

In 2025, we granted out $2,000,000 across 26 organizations through a model of care-based philanthropy.

Over 65% of WBU's grant-making went to organizations led by and for women and gender-expansive people directly impacted by incarceration and carceral systems.
