Women Building Up (WBU) is a movement-accountable philanthropic organization built by and for women, girls, and gender-expansive people directly impacted by carceral systems.

What We Do •

What We Do •

Convene

We invest in the people doing the work. We create space and opportunities for leaders to come together, learn from each other, host conversations and movement collaboration, and to rest.

Fund

We fund grassroots efforts organized by and for directly impacted women, girls, and gender-expansive people — locally, nationally, and internationally — and work to grow the total resources flowing to those closest to the work. As a trusted bridge between philanthropy and movements, we bring new and non-traditional donors into relationship with this work.

Connect

We connect community members to resources and to one another in our 19,000 square foot home in Brooklyn at 401 State Street. Community members co-work, host events, collaborate, and build relationships with one another.

Our Early Impact

In 2025, we granted out $2,000,000 across 20+ organizations through a model of care-based philanthropy.

Over 65% of WBU's grant-making went to organizations led by and for women and gender-expansive people directly impacted by incarceration and carceral systems.
