Women Building Up (WBU) is a movement-accountable philanthropic organization built by and for women, girls, and gender-expansive people directly impacted by carceral systems. As an intermediary, WBU directs financial resources to grassroots leaders and provides a space in Brooklyn to support work and collaboration across grassroots efforts.

What We Do •

What We Do •

Convene

We invest in the people doing the work, creating space for leaders to connect, rest, learn from each other, and build the organizational strength to sustain their movements over time.

Fund

We fund grassroots efforts organized by and for directly impacted women, girls, and gender-expansive people — locally, nationally, and internationally — and work to grow the total resources flowing to those closest to the work.

Connect

We offer our community a coworking space at 401 State Street — our 19,000-square-foot Brooklyn home. Community members host events, collaborate, and build relationships across shared space and convenings.

Our Impact

Over 70% of WBU's grantmaking goes to organizations led by and for women and gender-expansive people directly impacted by incarceration and carceral systems.
